LaserSpeed Terminology

LaserSpeed is a laser-based, non-contact measurement system that is often searched using a variety of terms. It uses a technology known as Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) to measure the length and speed of products. LDV uses the Doppler shift in a laser beam to measure the velocity of moving transparent, semi-transparent, or opaque reflective moving surfaces. Depending on the industry, the LaserSpeed measurement system is often termed as a non-contact length and speed encoder, non-contact length and speed gauge, non-contact encoder, non-contact gauge, length and speed sensor, or simply optical encoder. Many of these non-contact length and non-contact speed measurement terms have become synonymous with the LaserSpeed product name.

LaserSpeed offers a number of significant advantages over contact-type measurement methods, such as mechanical contact encoders, rotary encoders, tachometers, and shaft encoders. And, it can be used in a wide range of applications such as continuous length measurement, discrete length measurement, speed measurement, differential speed control, cut control (cut-to-length, post-cut length, etc.), product positioning/position control, stretch and draw control, and other process control applications.
